Hi friends! I'm home in California now and trying to get back on track. It has not been easy. I don't recommend going to Hawaii for two days. It was quite the tease and has me wishing we didn't leave, at least not so soon! The weather was beautiful, the wedding was amazing, and we quite frankly worked our asses off. I can't wait to take a look at the footage! Right now though, my main focus is my shop. It is prime time for Valentine's Day orders and I'm so amazed by how busy I have been!

When Valentine's Day has passed and I have some time to think, I plan to take a break and focus on where I want my business to go. I want to sit down and fill up my notebook with the ideas that have been filling my head lately. I want to plan for the day that I run my business full-time. I understand it's a big goal. I understand it's not going to be easy. But I need to live happily and I need to be passionate about what I do for the rest of my life.

The thing is, I will never have that light bulb moment, that realization, of "today is the day that I'm going to quit my job because my business is as successful as needed for me to make a living". That's never going to happen because I currently don't have the time to develop my business to that point. I have 20 business ideas in my head right now, but no time to follow through with them. No time to make the extra effort. That's why I feel the need to take leap of faith, jump in head first and go for it. However, most people tell me that's not a good idea. :]

I know a lot of you are self-employed, or perhaps aspiring to be, like myself. I'd love to hear any advice, words of wisdom, or stories of your own! How did you know you were ready? Or did you ever know for that matter? xo JA

Hullo there! When Julie asked me to hang out on her blog, I was like "umm, ok... amazing! I totally feel like one of the cool kids now!" I mean come on, she's awesome, right!? I'm pretty sure you can tell how excited I am to be here. Who am I? I'm Dana and you can usually find me blogging over at Wonder Forest and creating cute things for my shop.

I am a web/graphic designer by day (and usually by night as well) and I have a guilty pleasure for watching home renovation shows. You can find me over on Pinterest pretty much every day, and I occasionally share some of my own makeup and hair tutorials there. I'm a Canadian who is engaged to an American boy, and he is my absolute best friend in the entire world. In the past, I had been asked how I knew I was truly in love with this crazy American, and he was questioned on how he could just pick up his life and move to a different country for a silly girl. The answer was simple really, and since Valentines Day is approaching I figured I would share the love:

Love is knowing without speaking.

Love is comfort.

It is crying in loving arms when you just need to let it out.

It is sympathy when feeling down.

Love is non judgmental.

It is not caring about your flaws. Love is raw.

Love is little moments.

Love is no makeup and sweatpants. Love is sharing private moments.

It is sharing everything.

Love is sacrifice

and knowing it is ok to get angry.

It has special secrets and inside jokes.

Love is peeing with the door open.

It is being real. More than you've ever been real before.

Love is knowing that nobody is perfect, even you.

It is dancing obnoxiously around a living room.

Love is truth.

Love is letting loose.

Love doesn't care if your legs are perfectly shaved every day.

It doesn't care that your hair is a mess.

It is knowing you have a best friend until the end.

Love is a two way street. Love is not perfect, but it is perfect for you.

It is unlike anything you've ever felt.

Completely crazy, unjustified love.

2. Stop comparing! Comparing yourself and your work to people you admire and look up to can cramp your creativity! Your personal style and skills are one of a kind! This goes for creative endeavors and life as well! Just be you!

Tina Fey is a huge role model for me. If Tina tried to be like everyone else and imitated other people - the world would sadly miss out on 30 Rock, Bossy Pants, and everything else she has touched and turned to gold! (and please! What would I watch while I’m knitting at night?) When I feel self-conscious about my blog, photography, or projects-- I remember that there are people really enjoy what I do. I have a responsibility to be me and stop comparing myself to people I admire.

3. Non-judgment / acceptance – I haven't always allowed myself to experience my creativity. In my teen years I began judging my and eventually let my self-criticism rob me of my creative joy. I let my insecurities run the show and stopped making art and crafting. In the past few years I've started to overcome the crippling self-criticism and strengthen my creative (and confident) muscles.

Don’t judge others either! You never know where your next big idea might come from. Be open to inspiration. Don’t close your mind and your heart and stifle your creative flow. You never know what will inspire you! This goes for people, places, and things too! The really “annoying” girl at work might one day have just the words you need to hear. Colors might speak to you at a really “stupid” party! The skirt that doesn’t fit after the holidays might be the perfect fabric for something beautiful! With an open mind, anything can happen!

4. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Crafting is an amazing opportunity to turn trash into treasure! It’s so rewarding to create beauty from something ordinary. There are so many crafts you can make with recycled and reused materials! Making something from reused items is great for Mother Earth too—and that’s something to feel good about!

5. See the best in everything. Make something from nothing. Take something old and turn it into something beautiful. This is an especially rich parallel. Choose to see the best in people and situations. A yoga teacher once said in a workshop that when you teach yoga you start with what is beautiful in a student’s pose and work from that point to bring more beauty and grace to the pose-- not working to fix what's "wrong". Shifting your perspective is a simple thing that can rock your world! In crafting this means to find what is beautiful in your work or materials and start from that point. Find your favorite part and work to enhance it.

Hawaii Bound

So although I've been talking about this on Twitter for a while, I realized I have not talked about what's in store for this weekend on my blog yet. If you haven't heard, we are heading to Hawaii tomorrow to shoot another wedding! I have tonight to pack up and mentally prepare, and tomorrow we leave for LAX at 5am.

I'm putting my shop in vacation mode until Sunday. It was a hard decision but I think it was the right one. There's no way I'd be able to handle coming home Sunday night to three days of piled up orders. So I'm planning to reopen as soon as I return and go into full gear for the Valentine's Day rush!

I've been to Hawaii before and it was definitely one of the best vacations of my life. This trip is going to be really quick, and 90% of the time we will be working, or preparing to be working. So it won't be quite the same but I'm hoping we get a little bit of beach time at some point (besides for the wedding!)

I'm very excited (minus the plane ride part) and already can't wait to share the video with you guys! I'll be sure to post lots of photos on Instagram (username: JulieAnnArt)! Hi! My name is Casey Wiegand, I am a freelance artist, wife and mama. I love painting and sharing our life through my blog...where you can expect pieces of my perspective on life, faith, kids, marriage, with touches of art, creative inspiration, projects and things I love along the way.

I will begin at my highschool graduation
(where it all began....sort of).

Chris is 4 years older than me so he was at my highschool graduation with his current girlfriend at the time (they were watching her little sis graduate). I am not sure how this came about but he asked who I was. smiley face. She told him... that is Casey Jones and she'll be at Baylor next year. I graduate, make it to Baylor and Chris can name countless times that we were at the same places... always remembering who I was from that initial sighting. My sophomore year he sat behind me at a concert and tried to get the courage to talk to me the whole time and never said a word. Fast forward time....(he is older) he graduates, moves back to Dallas. I still don't know he exists and we have still never officially met.

*Another funny sidenote. Some of Chris' friends from college live right near my parent's house so he would always drive past hoping to see me. :)

I graduate college in August. One night Chris was at a highschool football game with a bunch of guys and my little brother, Travis, walks up to the group. Chris asks who that is..."Casey Jones' little brother" (so I am back on his mind)...then later that evening we both randomly wind up at a Kanakuk reunion. He waited at the bottom of the elevators to talk to me and I took the stairs!

Finally he decided just to get my number and call me. What was supposed to be a phonecall for a "sort-of" blind date turned into hours of conversation. I didn't even know what he looked like at the time. I remember when I went to answer the door, my heart literally stopped....I could not believe someone so handsome and so sweet was standing there.

I tend to be a bit of a homebody. And I remember my brother saying to me one day - "youre never going to meet anyone staying home all the time"... and my response was, God knows me, He knows how I tick... if He must, He will bring him to me.

And He did!

He took me out on a date on October 21. I remember thinking I was in serious trouble because there was such an instant connection. We are both artists, see the world very uniquely, have interesting personalities with very specific needs.

Three months later he told me he loved me and wanted to spend his life with me.

We went to Hawaii after 5 months of dating and he proposed to me on our one year anniversary.
We had an 8 month engagement, married on June 16...
I was 23 years old.
We started our business/studio when I was 24.
We had Aiden when I was 25, Ainsleigh at 27 and a miscarriage with Addison at age 28.
And here we are today.

There is obviously a lot that has happened in the middle. We have had some messy patches, hard patches, ups & downs. I have let him down a zillion times and he has done the same.

But at the end of the day... Christopher has always said
"There was only girl I could spend my life with...and that's you."

And I believe it.
Through better or worse.
He has made all my dreams come true.
He has changed my life.
He has loved me well.
He has made me a better me.
Through day in and day out.

He chose me. And I am thankful.

My Style: Working Weekend

We've had a busy weekend! Lots of work being done, it feels like Santa's workshop over here (Jordan has even called me "Santa" a few times. Maybe I shouldn't have worn my red pants)! We've managed to get out of the house and enjoy some really delicious meals and taken Pen around for some walks. But we are all putting time and effort into the crazy orders coming in. So thankful for the support my shop is getting this year. And I know a lot of it is because of you guys. You're the best!

Getting Over The Fear

So here's the deal. I want to go to SNAP. (SNAP is a craft and social media conference in Utah, targeting the best bloggers representing modern handmade, contemporary craft, mind-blowing events and home DIY). So then go, right? What's the problem?

Well, you see, I'm shy. The thought of going and knowing no one scares me. I mean, obviously I'm going to be alone in the corner when everyone else in the room is bffs. Ok, I'm exaggerating. But honestly, the thought gives me anxiety.

Shyness and anxiety have been things I've dealt with my whole life. It takes me a while to open up and be myself around people (then why do you have a blog, weirdo?). Let's just say it's a lot less daunting for me to be myself on my blog, than to introduce myself to a bunch of people that I *may* know of, or that *may* know of me.

So I've been pondering and pondering this "dilemma" in my head and then I realized something. I need to get over it. Face it. Deal with it. Do it.

I'd be meetings hundreds of other girls. Girls who inspire me. Girls who share the same interests as me. Girls who understand the reason and work that goes into a blog. Networking will be done, but more importantly, friendships will be made. Why would I ever pass that opportunity up?

So. I'm going to go, officially. As long as you promise to say hi to me if you see me! ;] I still need to figure out the details as far as flights and hotels (anyone need a roomie?) but I'm going to go. I can't miss it!

If any past-conference-goers have advice or tips for this newbie, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Guest Blogger: The Letter 4

Hi friends! So happy to share this adorable tutorial from the amazing girls of The Letter 4 today! These girls have the cutest blog, be sure to pay them a visit!

Hey there! My name is Jamie and I blog over at The Letter 4 with my three other sisters. We are 4 sisters that grew up very close to one another. Now we have since all grown up and moved away and we miss the 3:00 am laughing, the projects we did together, stealing each others clothes, and everything that goes along with growing up with sisters.

Our blog has been our way to connect to each other again and share projects with each other. Each sister has a unique taste and talent but we all have a passion for creating beautiful things!

I have a serious problem. I never ever ever can find my phone. If I can go the entire day without looking for my phone it's a good day. And actually I don't know where my phone is more days then where I know it is. And yes they have that app where it will locate your phone but it's just so much easier not to lost it in the first place, right? I tell people (ok lets be honest my sisters are the ones who call me so I told them) that I can never find it cause I am always walking around the house in yoga pants and a t-shirt and have no pockets to hold my phone in. Insert, the iphone pouch necklace.....

This was one of those projects that I wasn't sure would work out, but I desperately needed something like this so I attempted it and quite frankly, I'm in love!

So how I made it was I took some white fabric I had traced out a piece of fabric that was twice as long as the iphone and then some for some seam allowance. (say hello to me in the phone!)

Then I took some painters tape and made my triangles making sure to press the tape down as flat as I could so the paint wouldn't bleed.

Then I sponged on some paint and let it dry! When you are painting it be sure to just touch the fabric rather than sweep it, again avoiding bleeding.

The next part I cheated. I used a lifeline known as "my sister Janae will sew it for me." I cannot sew for the life of me! But she simply sewed a hem at the top and then sewed up the sides! Then Janae also so graciously let me us an chain off of an old necklace that she had and I glued it into the sides on the inside and then hand stitched one of the links to make sure it would stay.

Done! Now I have NO excuse not to have my phone on me anymore. And I love love love this thing. It's been a week and I have not lost my phone once, that's kind of a miracle in my life. My sisters are thrilled they can get a hold of me!

Weekend in Instagrams

I really enjoy this new Instagram series I've started doing! This weekend's Instagram photos are a little different than past posts. We didn't go to Lake Tahoe. We didn't celebrate a holiday. Quite frankly, we worked a lot.

While Penny may have done some relaxing, things are very busy over here! I don't know what I would do without the help from my mom and Jordan right now. (But I can guess I'd probably be freaking out, on the verge of crying, wanting to rip my hair out...)

We've been folding.

We've been addressing.

We've been packaging.

But, while keeping up with the order flow, we've also managed to enjoy ourselves. We had some great family time this weekend, and also go to enjoy some celebratory drinks together!

I think it's really important to create a balance between work and play. I always make sure to take breaks and have "me time" no matter how overwhelmed I may be. It's the only way to keep sane.

PaintedEpoxy is made up of two people - jewelry by Amber and art by Auroch. We started early in August 2011, nameless at that point. To kick off my first guest post during busy season I'm happy to hand the mic (keyboard?) over to my interweb bff, Leonora! She is, frankly, frickin hilarious.

Why hello loves! My name is Leonora from Yellow Heart Art! I make pretty things over here & ramble on and on (and on) about life over here.

I love the color mustard yellow, I cry whenever that darn ASPCA commercial with Sarah Mclachlan and the super sad puppies comes on the TV (Yeah, you know what I'm talking about, don't act like you don't bee line it for the remote when that shiz pops up--Dear ASPCA, you can have all my money, just stop ruining my day) I'm afraid of heights and will jump in any and all puddles while rockin' out in my pink and purple argyle rain boots.

When Julie asked if I wanted to guest post for her while she is busy creating valentines (one of her busiest time of the year!) I was all like "homegirl, please, I am so on that like white on rice" "it's on like donkey kong" "I'll be there or be squared" (Ok, I really don't talk like this) (but imagine if I did?) (let's all bring back these phrases please) (Goal for 2012: rock out early 90s sayings) (cowabunga) (see how easy that way?) (ok, I'm done)

Crumb Topping Blueberry Muffin Recipe

I made this blueberry muffin recipe this weekend and they were so good, I had to share. I got muffin tins for Christmas and wanted to put them to use. Plus, I had blueberries that have been sitting in the freezer for too long (yes, I didn't even use fresh blueberries and these were still the best muffins ever). Not into muffins for breakfast? Last night I heated one of these up and had it with French Vanilla ice cream. It was amazing!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup white sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

1/3 cup milk

1 cup fresh blueberries

1/2 cup white sugar

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup butter, cubed

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease muffin cups or line with muffin liners (I didn't have liners so I used PAM and the muffins popped right out of the tins). Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, salt and baking powder. Place vegetable oil into a 1 cup measuring cup; add the egg and enough milk to fill the cup. Mix this with flour mixture. Fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups right to the top, and sprinkle with crumb topping mixture.

To Make Crumb Topping: Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup flour, 1/4 cup butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Mix with fork, and sprinkle over muffins before baking.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until done.

Jordan said, and I quote him, "These are the best muffins I've ever had." I love that I was able to throw these together while using ingredients I already had in the house. I also have chocolate chips in my cupboard...I may have try the chocolate version of this recipe next! Enjoy!

Office Tour

I have been spending so much time in my little office space lately that I thought I'd share it with you! It's sort of where "all the magic happens." Whether I'm designing, promoting, printing, packaging I'm most likely sitting right here at my desk.

I do my very best to keep my area clean. I find I work better when there isn't stuff lying around everywhere. Maybe it's the slightly-organization-obsessed part of me but it's easiest for me to focus with a clean table top! (Do you recognized the painted side table from this post?)

In my attempt to stay organized and tidy, I always keep a look out for storage containers at the thrift store. My favorite find was this metal set of drawers. Three bucks and it's perfect for storing my cards!

I have two framed prints I bought from Elsie a while back on each side of my desk.

To add some extra cuteness (ok a lot of extra cuteness) to my work space, I added the amazing vintage sewing machine Jordan got me for Christmas last year. I seriously think this is the prettiest sewing machine I have ever seen.

The newest addition to the office is this inspiration board I got c/o Soft Surroundings. I love it because it helps display all my cards and photos in an organized, yet cute, way. I wasn't ready to part with some of the Christmas cards I received this year so it was a perfect place to put them! Plus, how cool are the vintage postage replicas stamped on it? DIY Valentine's Day Decorations

Ok, I admit it. I don't want to take down my Christmas decorations. I know the holiday is over, I know it's time to move on. But I love the warm feel that the strings of lights give our house. And let's face it, digging the storage boxes out of the garage and strategically packaging up each individual ornament is not going to be fun.

I'm trying to motivate myself by focusing on the next holiday. I've never decorated for Valentine's Day before and let's be honest, we have quite a lot of love in our home already. :] But, if it helps me get over my current Christmas decoration nostalgia, I'm going to try it. I've been searching Pinterest for some inspiration and found all kinds of fun ideas I want to try now.

New Years In Instagrams

For New Years weekend I flew (nervously) to Lake Tahoe. It was my first time there and I had no idea how beautiful it would be! The water was so blue and so clear!

We took a gondola up the mountain for a day of snowboarding.

Busy Season

With Christmas over, there is another holiday on my mind. Who am I kidding, it was on my mind before Christmas too. I'm thinking about Valentine's Day. Now this is not because I'm one of those girls who makes a big deal about the holiday. I don't expect flowers, I don't expect chocolate (actually you better not get me chocolate because I have been doing great with my cardio barre classes!). I think about this holiday because it is the busiest season for my Etsy shop.

I look forward to it every year, but this year more than ever because my business in general is doing better than ever. For the past month I've been brainstorming, preparing, marketing, designing. I'm ready. And I'm so so excited! Plus, my mom is coming to California for a few weeks in mid-January! Perfect timing for her to help me with orders, right? ;]

I realized that with busy season plus my mom in town (because let's face it, she can be a handful) I didn't want to neglect my blog! I'm happy to say I will have some exciting guest posts coming your way throughout January from some of my very favorite bloggers! Warm Special Apple Cider Recipe

Some of you have asked me about the cider recipe I've been talking about on Twitter. Well, it's pretty delicious and I'm happy to share. The only thing is, there is no real recipe. I just sort of add some extra ingredients to normal cider to make it extra amazing. I got this idea from Jordan's sister a couple years ago and one rainy day last month Jordan and I just got this craving. It guess it was just a warm cider kind of day.

What you'll need:

Butter

Sugar

1 Apple

Cinnamon

Dark Rum (optional)

Cider

(I use Trader Joe's Spiced Cider, 64 oz.)

Cut your apple into slices. Add them to a large pot and saute them in butter, sugar and cinnamon. I honestly just added what I thought was a good amount, there are no real measurements here. Continue to saute until the apple slices have softened and the ingredients have started to caramelize. Then pour the entire jug of Cider into the pot. Keep over heat, stirring, for another five minutes or so until the mixture becomes an even consistency. Then, if you'd like to make it a little more special, the drink tastes great with a dark rum. The amount you add is up to you. ;] Enjoy!

Jordan and I went to see Girl With The Dragon Tattoo this weekend. (I left the theater feeling disturbed yet intrigued at what happens next.) I wanted to wear something cute but casual. We had a great three-day Christmas weekend. I'm sad it's over! We had the house lit up all festive, Christmas music playing, yummy candles burning...it was so special to me.

2012 Goals

2011 has been an amazing year. Jordan and I found our home. I took my first trips to San Francisco and Catalina. I made the front page of Etsy for the first (and second, and third!) time. We got a videography gig in Australia! And of course, this year I started my journey of blogging!

Probably one of the best years of my life because I'm really starting to see my life develop into what I feel it should be. So how to top it? I've been thinking a lot about next year....what I want to be doing and where I want to be doing it.

The obvious goal is to start working on my shop and blog full-time. But that is such a huge goal that I don't want to put a time limit on it. Instead I'd rather focus on little goals that will one day get me to that point (whenever that may be).

Besides the continued growth in my shop and blog, my next goal regards my health. I need to have more consistent exercise in my life. My biggest challenge when it comes to exercise is time. With working a full-time job, blogging 5 times a week, and keeping up with shop orders, I often use the excuse "I'm too busy." But I just recently started taking a cardio barre class 2-3 times a week. Point blank, it kicks my ass. I know this is mostly because I haven't had consistent, hard exercise, well, ever. At first it was torture, but I'm slowly finding myself enjoying it more. Maybe even looking forward to the next class (did I really just say that?). I want to keep this new activity going.

My last goal is to stay positive. I am so so thankful for what I have in life. I feel so lucky. Sometimes I focus too much on the negative things, the "petty" things. I let those things get to me way more than I should. And why? There's no reason for it. So next year I really want to focus on not 'sweating the small stuff' and remember just great amazing I have it.

BIG NEWS: We're Going To OZ!

I'm so happy I finally get to share this news! We have been working on the final details for weeks now and it's been killing me to keep it a secret. I just didn't want to announce it till it was 100% official. And as of like two seconds ago, the plane tickets have been bought and Jordan and I are going to Australia to shoot another wedding!!

Most of you have probably seen this wedding video we shot of our friend's wedding. Well, so did my Etsy friend, Belle. She wrote me asking if we'd be interested in, or able to, come to Australia to shoot her sister-in-law's wedding. She loved the video we made and thought it would be the perfect gift for the bride and groom.

Jordan and I freaked out at the news, obviously. We've been talking about taking a "big trip" for months now, and the timing of the wedding (March) was perfect. We tried not to get too excited for fear that it wouldn't work out. I mean, it sort of felt like a "too good to be true" opportunity. I'm happy to say that the details have all been worked out and it is really and truly happening! We are making a trip out of it, and will be exploring Australia on a 10 day stay!

We are so flattered and inspired to continue this new journey we have started. It's crazy to think that this would not have happened if I didn't start this blog! Everything is coming together, dreams are coming true. I still don't think I'll fully believe this is happening until I touch down in Sydney, Australia!

A House Fire

My mom called me this weekend and as soon as she said "Hi Jules...." I knew something was wrong. Turns out, there was a fire in my mom's house....the house I grew up in.

I listened as she told me how she kept smelling something funny, and that sniffing out the smell led her to a corner in our family room, where she could hear the flames inside the wall. She told me how her boyfriend kicked a hole in the wall to use a fire extinguisher on the flames till the firemen came. She told me "I'm sorry Jules, but I think your piano is ruined." She told me they were ok, but shaken up, and could not return home for 2-3 months.

It was around that time when I started to realize how this phone call could have went. I tried to focus on the fact that my mom was ok, and the house would be repaired. But I couldn't help but think about how I would feel if something happened to my mom while I was in California.

When I thought about moving away from home, I didn't think about the "what ifs." I didn't think about what I would miss out on. I didn't think about what could happen while I was gone. (I didn't think about earthquakes even though my mom repeatedly asked "Aren't you worried about earthquakes?"

With dwindling long distance friendships, grandparents who are only getting older, and now a fire in the house I spent 20 years in....I'm learning what a sacrifice I made by leaving. I have no regrets, but I know I will always miss the feeling of home. Even if that home is different now.

Special thanks to everyone on Twitter who sent good thoughts and prayers my way when I mentioned the fire. It never ceases to amaze me how supportive you are.

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

Christmas Traditions

Throughout the years, my traditions for the Christmas holiday have changed. Obviously, things like my parent's divorce and my move across country have put a damper on what my Christmas traditions were as a child. Since I have only been in California for a couple Christmases, and this is my first one living with Jordan, I have yet to build my "traditions" here. I do, however, have a few things that I specifically associate, and celebrate, the Christmas season with.

Bing Crosby - His deep, rich voice always reminds me of Christmas. I love my Bing Crosby Holiday station on Pandora. :]

Starbuck's Peppermint Mocha Latte - My mouth is watering now. This is my drink of choice this season. There's something so cozy about holding a warm Peppermint Mocha in my glove-covered hands on a chilly December day!

The Lights - I am loving decorating our house with lights this year!! I sort of want to leave them all year round, but that would make them less special for the Christmas season I suppose. We have a huge palm tree in our front yard that Jordan wants to wraps with lights. He keeps talking about 'building a harness' for himself, as though to help him shimmy up the tree. No thanks, I like my boyfriend with no broken bones.

White Christmas - I think this movie may have been the start of my love for Bing Croby. My cousin and I would watch this movie all the time at my Grandma's house when we were kids (as in all year round, not just at Christmas time). It will always have a special place in my heart!

She + Him Christmas Edition - I have a girl crush on Zoey Deschanel. There I said it. Not only am I in love with her new show, New Girl, but I love this album!

Aw, now I feel all warm and fuzzy! I love this time of year. Although how I celebrate my Christmases has continued to change, I always look forward to my favorite Christmas things! Do you have ongoing traditions this season?

Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

We had some friends over for dinner on Saturday night for Jordan's birthday. I wanted to make some cookies for dessert and while browsing Pinterest I came across this recipe. The photo kind of says it all. They tasted as good as they looked! Probably the best cookie I've ever made. You've gotta try them! You can find the initial recipe here. I'm going to share the slightly less complicated version I made.

What you'll need:

1/2 pound unsalted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup packed light-brown sugar

2 large eggs

3 cups plus 1 tablespoon flour

1/2 tablespoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

1 pound bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using an electric mixer (mine is the hand-held kind) mix together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well in between. Add the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla and chocolate, blending them together at a low setting. Continue till mixed well.

Place heaping tablespoons, 2 inches apart, on a greased baking sheet. Bake for about 11 minutes, or until they start to brown. Place on a wire rack until cool. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

They are amazing. This is definitely my new go-to recipe when it comes to chocolate chip cookies. I won't be going back to the Nestle Tool House recipe ever again! Enjoy.

DIY Christmas Ornament Tutorials

While browsing Pinterest to find something decorative to do with the extra pine cones I have I noticed all the brilliant handmade ornaments on there! Some people are SO creative. I had to share my favorites!

DIY Wrapping Paper Tutorial

Since I shared a lot of gift wrap ideas last week, I thought I'd share how I packaged my presents last year, and plan to do this year as well. I use plain wrapping paper (last year I used white and this year I'm using kraft) and decorate it using a stamp.

What you'll need:

Stamp

Acrylic Paint

Small Paintbrush

Put a glob of paint on the tip of your paint brush.

Coat your stamp with paint and press it firmly on your wrapped package.

Just a quick and simple way to add a special handmade touch to your packages!

I also just wanted to take a moment for the support I got on this post. I realized it was my first moment of real vulnerability on this blog and it was somewhat nerve-wracking for me. The response I got was heart warming. I learned that I am not alone. A lot of people shared their similar story with me. Some who live in my area even reached out to me. It just confirmed how special the blogging world is!

Filling a Void

Moving to California was one of the best decisions of my life. That being said, it has not always been the easiest transition for me. One of my biggest struggles has been developing true friendships. While I have a couple close friends here I miss my girlfriends from home every single day.

What bothers me the most is that since being here, I've been letting other people's ways effect mine. Not having many people I can depend on has shaken me up and hindered my actions. I feel like I'm very rarely myself when I am with anyone but those select few that I trust. I'm finding that feeling uneasy about my surroundings has made my shyness escalate.

That being said, some may wonder how my "shyness" has allowed me to have this blog. Here I am, sharing my life with mostly strangers. But the thing is, I don't really think about that. It's actually really easy (although a lot of work!) for me to have this blog. I guess it's because I know that I am sharing myself with people who enjoy what I do. It's easy to "talk" to people who I know will only come to listen if they want to.

I love connecting with other people who have the same interests as I do. That is something that I regrettably lack in my "real" life. This blog has been an incredible way for me to befriend other girls just like me. It has made that void in my every day life less prominent. I'm thankful.

Fabric Garland Tutorial (No Sewing!)

Last weekend I made some fabric garland to add to the holiday decoration at our house. I had some extra white fabric laying around (leftover from Jordan's Halloween costume) and I thought turning it into some festive garland would be a great way to put it to use. Most of you know that I don't know how to sew (yet) so this tutorial doesn't involve any needles or thread!

What you'll need:

Scrap fabric

Scissors

Hot Glue Gun

String

Start by cutting rectangles of your fabric. My rectangles were about 8x11 but if I did it again I would make them more like 8x15 so that the fabric pieces were longer. The amount of rectangles you need depends on how long and full you want to make the garland. I ended up making 25.

Cut 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide strips, 1/3 of the way in, on each short side of the rectangle.

Then tightly roll the fabric, starting on one of the long sides. You may have to detangle the strips as you go.

Once it's completed rolled, fold it in half. Wrap a small scrap piece of fabric around the top to fasten the roll together. Hot glue the scrab fabric in place.

Attach fabric to the string by pulling the string through the top loop of the fabric. Then it's ready to hang! I added a few glittery snowflakes to mine to add some color, and then put a strand of white lights along it.

Shop Handmade

Ok, I admit it. I've been going a little shopping crazy lately. All on Etsy though, so I mean, at least I'm supporting my fellow indie business friends, right? And a lot of the shopping was done on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, so at least I'm attempting to be frugal with my spending.

But I just can't help it. Etsy is amazing. Etsy sellers are amazing. I don't know where they come up with these creative ideas, but they are so unique and brilliant, it's never-ending inspiration. I'm starting to get my packages in the mail and every single time I am in love with the item....pretty packaging, hand-written thank you notes, customer service you would never get at say, the mall.

Etsy sellers take pride in their product. They love what they do. They aren't working just to get a pay check. They aren't counting down the hours till their shift ends (in fact their shift actually never ends). They aren't trying to get you to buy some mass-produced, machine-made product so they meet their monthly quota. They care. They care about their business, their product, and most importantly, their customers.

I know first-hand that it is a special feeling to have someone purchase an item you made. I guess that's why I love buying handmade....to spread that special feeling.

This off-the-shoulder sweater from Lamixx is perfect to lounge around in but still look (and feel) cute! This was my fourth purchase from Lamixx and I love everything in their shop. Basic but sexy!

I got this stackable ring from Laonato and I'm in LOVE! It is exactly what I was looking for at a great price. I love being able to switch up how I wear each band!

Simple Tradition's sugar scrub is my favorite! It feels SO good on my skin. I went back on Cyber Monday and bought four more jars of it.

Love this shirt from ThePetiteChouette! This is what I'm talking about, using creativity to add extra cuteness to every day items. I couldn't pass up that little bear face!

I'm a big fan of SonOfASailor's entire shop. Their jewelry is right up my alley. I made my first purchase last weekend with this simple chevron bracelet.

I'm sort of a sucker for cute packaging so I had to pick up this adorable washi tape set from LittleHappyThings to package orders from my shop.

And of course I've been looking for Christmas presents for others on Etsy as well. Just can't share those on here. ;] Are you buying handmade this year?

Gift Wrapping Ideas

Last night I was wrapping up my gift for the Cold Hands, Warm Hearts gift swap by Much Love, Illy and SandyALaMode, and I realized something. I may be "crafty" but I am sort of awful at wrapping presents. I rip the paper when I'm cutting it. I end up with way too much paper, which results in messy folds. Sure, I try to cover up the crumpled edges with pretty strings and fancy things, but I really wish I was capable of the beautiful packages I've seen on Pinterest!

My Weekend in Instagrams

Burned up! It was a hot weekend.

After Jordan got home Sunday night we had a scare with Penny and had to take her to the animal hospital. She had a bad reaction to some medicine. Thankfully she is her normal self again!

Mason Jar Snow Globe Tutorial

I had so much fun making this next project! I tend to grab mason jars from garage sales and thrift stores whenever I can find them (today I actually snagged a turquoise one!). They have so many uses, from baking to crafts projects. This weekend I turned a few of my mason jars into snow globes for Christmas!

What you'll need:

Any jar that seals

Distilled Water

Liquid Glycerin

Glitter

Figurines

Epoxy/Crazy Glue

(I found the glycerin at the drug store in the pharmacy section.)

Using the Crazy Glue, attach your figurines to the lid of the mason jar. Let them dry completely. (I waited 24 hours to be sure.)

Next, fill your jar almost to the top with distilled water. Add a dash of liquid glycerin (this is used to make the glitter fall more slowly). The amount is glitter you add is sort of at your own discretion. I ended up experimenting and some of mine have a lot of glitter and some don't. Jordan's has a ton. ;) Screw the cap on tightly and shake your jar to get the glitter moving.

And you're done! Give your Christmas decorations a pretty handmade touch this year using this easy tutorial!

Just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone stuffed themselves with a delicious meal (and of course thought about what you're thankful for)! I had a fun Skype session with my family in Michigan. I miss them so much! Aren't they cute? :]

Now while others are braving the crowds in the stores for Black Friday, I'm going to string the first set of lights around our little Christmas tree. I admit I'm a sucker for a sale but the lines and the people just don't win over the coziness of my home. DIY Christmas Decoration Tutorials

Those of you who follow me on Twitter probably know that Jordan has gone home to Virginia for the rest of the week (sadface). I've made a To-Do list of all the things I'd like to get done (and keep busy with). Among updating some blog features and prepping my shop for a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale, I'm hoping to make some Christmas decorations. I've been browsing the internet for a couple days and there are some great ideas out there that I can't wait to try!

Decorating for Christmas

I'm (already?) getting excited for Christmas. I'm pretty sure I have never been this in the Christmas spirit. I think it's partially because it's my first Christmas living with Jordan...and I can't wait to decorate our house. I already started and I plan to do more over Thanksgiving weekend!

It was a rainy weekend so I took the little Christmas decorations that we have out of the garage, lit some candles, put the She & Him Holiday playlist on Pandora, and started decorating. It was sort of like heaven to my newly Christmas adoring self. Did I mention I was also baking cookies simultaneously?

We've also started a Christmas decoration DIY project or two. And I've been trying to incorporate things I already have into holiday-related decor. I found this wooden box at the thrift store a few months ago so I added some pine cones and ornaments to create a festive centerpiece.

And of course Penny girl had to get festive too. These antlers lasted on her head for all of 1.5 seconds.

Have you started decorating yet? I'm hoping I'm not the only person who started before Thanksgiving!

I'm Thankful For...

I've been thinking about this post for a while now. About a month or two ago I just started feeling so thankful and so blessed with what I have in life. I think it's so easy to take things, people, for granted. Something that you do every day can become routine. Some one that you see every day can become expected. That makes it so easy to forget just how special what you have, is. I have recently starting realizing how much I love my life and how thankful I should be for everything that I have.

1.) My Gramps - My grandpa was diagnosed with Supranuclear Palsy. The past few years have been increasingly hard on my family as we've watched the disease take over his mind and body. Only going home a couple times a year, I notice a difference in him every time I see him. If there was one thing that made me feel guilty for moving away, it would be not being able to spend enough time with my grandpa at the end of his life. I realize now what a huge part of my life he has always been, always with his words of wisdom and encouragement.

2.) My Mom - Imagine my mom's dismay when her only child tells her she's moving across the country. (I actually told her on her birthday. Worst gift ever?) I know it has been hard on my mom to have her daughter be the only person in our entire family to move away. But even though it makes her sad, she knows that it is a good experience for me and tries her hardest to be supportive.

3.) My Boyfriend - I talk about him a lot so you've got to know by now that he's pretty great right? If you've read our story you know that it's kind of crazy how we got together. It's still funny for me to think about how we started out versus what we have become. I can't even explain how thankful I am for him. He is so supportive, so smart, so funny. I could lay on our living room floor laughing till my cheeks hurt with him every day for the rest of my life. I feel so lucky.

4.) My Business Growth - This has been such a fulfilling part of my year. My Etsy shop and my blog have been busier than ever before. It has been so so exciting and I am so thankful! Because of this great response, it really encourages me to continue to keep trying, keep thinking of new ideas, keep aspiring to get to where I want to be. The growth in my business has given me hope. It has raised my ambitions. It has inspired me. And it wouldn't have happened without you.

5.) Our House - It was quite the process getting our house. Jordan and I drove around countless neighborhoods searching for For Rent signs for months. I'm basically so experienced now at finding these signs that I can spot them from a mile away. In one of our many excursions, we found a new For Rent sign. The house it had a garage, a fenced yard and (bonus) a HUGE palm tree in the yard. We went to get the number on the sign and noticed that it was missing a number! Only 6 digits! Nooo! Jordan ended up climbing into the backyard, looking through the window, and barely making out the correct number that was on the opposite side of the sign. We set up an appointment and as soon as I viewed the house, I knew it was the one. It was exactly what we needed with 2 bedrooms and a fenced off grassy yard for Penny, plus several amenities that made it extra special. I am so thankful that after all the ups and downs of our search we have ended up with a home that we both truly love.

Hi friends! Just a few things to share before I run off to my last knitting class (my scarf is no where near finished, mind you). Black Bottoms Recipe

Jordan picked out the recipe for this post. His mom made Black Bottoms throughout his childhood and he had a craving. (No pressure...) Turns out, I did a good job. :] But now, I cannot stop devouring them! I packaged up a bunch to take to work tomorrow because I apparently have no control when it comes to these mini cupcakes of pure heaven. But I mean, chocolatey outside, creaming cream cheese and chocolate chips filling....can you blame me?

You're going to make two mixtures. First combine: 8 oz cream cheese, 1 egg, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/8 tsp salt, and 1 package chocolate chips. In a separate bowl, combine 1 1/2 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt. Then add the following to the dry ingredients: 1 cup water, 1/3 cup oil, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1 tb vinegar. Beat together.

So you should have to separate bowls of yumminess. Line a mini cupcake tin with mini cupcake wrappers. Fill the tin half way with the chocolate mixture. Then add a dollop of the cream cheese mixture on top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Let them cool and then prepare to get addicted!

Apple Crisp Recipe

So I'm pretty into baking. But the thing is, I don't like recipes with ingredients that I'm never going to use again (unless I specifically try to find a recipe that calls for it). I like recipes that are easy. I also like recipes that taste good. Enter: my mom's apple crisp recipe. Oh man. Super easy and super amazing. Plus I had every ingredient I needed in my cupboards (except the oats...we are eggs and bacon breakfast people.)

What you'll need:

5 Apples (peeled and sliced)

Lemon juice

Rolled Oats

Flour

Sugar

Cinnamon

Brown Sugar

Butter or Margarine

In a bowl, mix 4 cups of apples, 1 TB lemon juice, 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 TSP cinnamon.

Spray baking dish with Pam and transfer apple mixture to the dish.

In another bowl, mix 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Pour mixture over the apples in the dish. Then cut up 6 TB butter or margarine and spread over top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. This is my kind of recipe....throw common stuff into a dish, put it in the oven, devour the amazingness. Your house will smell so yummy. Pair a warm slice with some vanilla ice cream and it is the perfect Thanksgiving dessert (when you aren't a fan of pumpkin!).

Organizing Tights

Guess how I spent my weekend!! Organizing my closet! Jealous? Ok, being honest, I didn't really organize my closet, I just worked on hanging my tights nicely. It took all of five minutes and then I gave up on the closet for the rest of the weekend.

I had previously stored my tights in a drawer, but I always had a hard time finding the pair I was looking for. I'm the type of person that needs to see everything right in front of me. If it's hidden under a ton of socks in a drawer I'm probably not going to find it and most likely completely forget that I even own it. (Am I the only one who forgets she owns items of clothing until she finds them in the bottom of her hamper?)

I actually have more closet space than drawer space so this hanger technique is perfect for me! All my tights are in plain site, yet they don't take up a lot of room in the closet. And best of all, it's easier to keep them snag-free! Do you have any more closet organization tips to share?

Learning Something New

In a spontaneous effort to learn something new, my friend Leah (the bride from the wedding video we shot!) and I started taking a knitting class. It is held in the cutest little store called LMNOP right by my house. I haven't taken a class since I graduated from college in 2006, so I have to admit I was a little nervous. I am (was?) absolutely clueless about knitting and it was a slow start. But by the end of the two hours class, I started getting the hang of it! There are two more classes in the next two weeks and we are supposed to have a finished scarf by the end, just in time for chilly weather!

Even though I was a little worried going into the class I'm so glad I signed up. It's really important to me to continue learning new things as I grow older and not get too comfortable doing the same thing all the time. I really want to embrace as many skills as I can, especially now that I've gotten so involved in the handmade world. I think knitting is a good start. And sewing is next. ;]

Leaf Craft Tutorials

Although I love California, the Autumn leaves do not compare in the slightest to the colors Michigan gets. And while I miss the bright oranges and bright reds there is one thing I don't miss.....the raking! My mom's house has a huge backyard and what was my job? Raking. And raking. Oh, and more raking. Bags upon bags stuffed with all the fallen leaves from the yard. It got the DIY nerd in me thinking about all the leaf craft projects out there.

Decorate candles with leaves using this tutorial. (my favorite!)

Preserve leaves in wax and hang them as a decoration.

Paint the leaves and make a wreath for any season.

Press the leaves as you would flowers and frame them as art.

Follow this tutorial to make beautiful leaves on canvas.

There's all kinds of tutorials online with that use leaves! So if you're stuck raking, you might as well get some fun out of it and use them to create something pretty!

How to Open a Pomegranate

Believe it or not, this weekend we purchased our first pomegranate. I ran across them at the grocery store and instantly wanted one...I'm pretty familiar with the pomegranate martini if you know what I mean. We brought it home, stared at its odd shape for a bit, and ended up Googling how to tend to this yummy fruit. I thought that maybe I wasn't the only smartie who didn't know how to get the seeds out of a pomegranate so....here you go:

Cut about 1/4 inch of a slice off the end.

Score around the fruit several times.

Submerge the fruit in a large bowl of water for 5-10 minutes.

Break apart the fruit under the water to prevent juice spraying and staining!

The seeds will start to sink to the bottom of the bowl.

Scoop out the excess pith and use a strainer to separate the seeds from the water.

The seeds are delicious! It's like a burst of fruity flavor in your mouth. And so good for you too! I've heard they are really good in salads and I'm curious how else others use them. Fruit salads? Smoothies? Yum!

My iPhone

So remember when I did that What's In My Bag post and I shamefully showed off the severely cracked screen of my Droid phone? Well. It has happened. I crossed over...into iPhone land. And yes it is just as heavenly of a place as everyone told me it would be.

So I've spent the last week or two setting up my necessities and getting acquainted with my new friend, Siri. I'm also very happy to finally have Instagram! (Find me: JulieAnnArt.) But now I turn to you. What are your favorite apps? I've looked at articles online, such as "The 10 Most Popular iPhone Apps" but...well, I'm not talking Angry Birds here. Learning Through Blogging

I have been a follower of my favorite blogs for years now, but it was not until March of this year that I threw myself into writing my own blog. One day I just had this sort of epiphany of "Why am I not blogging?" All of a sudden I was working on a blog design and brainstorming posts. I was glued to my computer and Jordan was like "What is going on?" I don't really know what made me go "I'm going to blog!", but I think part of me knew that I was capable of creating a blog that was enjoyable for others, just as the blogs I followed were enjoyable to me.

It's been eight months now. And although the on-going, never-ending need to post quality content daily can get a little overwhelming at times, this blog has become the most enjoyable project I've ever worked on. Not only do I simply like to write and photograph, but it has already taught me more about myself and what I'm capable of.

1.) I'm a perfectionist.

Ok, so I may have known this a little bit already. But seeing Jordan's exasperation as I have to perfect every little detail has made me realize that maybe I'm a little bit too picky about...well...everything that I post on my blog. But I mean, is that so bad? Besides the fact that it could drive me or my boyfriend crazy, it ensures that I am 100% happy with what I do. It means that I only post what I think are attractive, quality posts that my readers will enjoy. So what if I have to reshoot the same product shot 174 times?

2.) I think big.

Blogging has brought me into the biggest, best network I could've imagined. Before I started this blog, I had no idea how huge the blogging world was. It really blows my mind that every single day I find a new amazing blog written by a creative woman who has the same interests as me. It is so inspiring! I've been able to reach out to and keep in touch with these girls and it makes me think every day of what we could be capable of. My ideas and my dreams are starting to soar because I know that if we all worked together we could really DO something.

3.) I'm modest.
I guess I have been modest my whole life. I am my biggest critic and I never think what I'm doing is good enough. I really never could've imaged that I would be this successful at blogging. It's still amazes me to see my follower counts rising because I still have that "Really? You like little old me?" attitude. Of course I have dreams of blogging with growth and success but I've always been so humble about my talents that it's hard to accept that my dream is actually happening. I need to start accepting that maybe I am sort of cool, at least to my readers. ;]

4.) I'm still learning.

I am really happy with my blogging journey so far, but I do find myself occasionally struggling with where I want to go with this blog. I see so many bloggers really getting personal with their readers. There was a point when I felt that I should too. Then I realized that I shouldn't be blogging like other bloggers. I should be blogging like myself. And well, I'm a shy girl. There are very few people in the world that know me really well, so to air out everything to people I have never met would be sort of impossible for me. I don't look at this blog as a place to "vent" but as a place to inspire. As I continue to learn what works for me and who I am as a blogger, I'm also learning who I am as a person.

Candy Corn Nail Tutorial

Last week I mentioned a few nail art tutorials and this weekend I finally got around to trying out some nail art on my own nails. I wanted to make them Halloween-themed, probably orange and black, but while looking at all my nail polishes I stumbled upon the yellow shade I had. Then it hit me, candy corn nails! Maybe I would hate them, but maybe I would like them, so I knew I had to try it out. I got a little experimental and I'm not sure if this is the easiest way to paint your nails this way, but this is how I did it.

What you'll need:

Orange polish

Yellow polish

White nail pen

Tape

Start out by painting your nails orange. Let your nails completely dry (I waited most of the day before moving to the next step). Then, wrap a piece of tape around your finger so that it is covering all of your nail except the base. Make sure you have a good seal between your nail and the tape.

Then paint over the area with your yellow nail polish. Wait until your nails are dry once again (I only waited about an hour this time) and peel off the tape. You should have a nice straight line of yellow on top of the orange.

Next I just took my white nail pen and carefully painted my nail tips white. Clean up around the edges a bit with some nail polish remover and a q-tip and you're all set! You've got yourself some super festive nails for the Halloween holiday!
