Michigan Bound

Well today I am on my way to Michigan! I would be more excited if I wasn't flying. Alone. With a layover. I'm not exactly the happiest passenger on the plane if you know what I mean. It sucks that my flying anxiety gets in the way of my excitement of seeing friends and family. As soon as I land in Detroit I will be happy!

I really don't know what the plan is for the next couple days. See my family. See my friends. It's hard to plan everything out and literally pencil everyone in for the day and time I will see them. But at the same time it's also necessary in order to see everyone I want to in such a short, busy, period of time.

xo.

The hardest thing about my move to California was (and is) being away from the most important people in my life. There have been so many times I've wanted to just sit on the couch and watch a chick flick with a girl friend from home. While we have the phone, and Skype even, I miss them so so much all the time. Being away has made me value their friendship even more, because it has stayed as strong as ever, despite living in different states.

Don't forget, you can get glimpses from my trip through photos I post on Twitter!

Feather Love

Ever since I got my first feather hair extensions I have had a style crush on feathers. A feather accessory can add style to any basic outfit. They are perfect for the earthy bohemian look that's ever so popular.

I love everything in deLoop's shop. She has the prettiest accessories.

Cutest garter for a woodland-them wedding!

The feather illustration makes me want this tea cup and saucer set.

In LOVE with this wedding dress feather sash.

Pretty illustration by Michele Maule. Love the colors.

Feather earrings are an easier way to get the feather hair extension look.

I have been having a very busy week, which has been hard since I've also been sick. I am trying to take it easy to get better, while also working overtime and preparing for my trip to Michigan on Thursday. I can't believe I'm going to see my friends and family in just a few days! So excited!

ADORABLE BABY DOLL DRESS FROM LYNNSRAGS!

I'm so excited for this week's giveaway! The lovely Lynn , over at LynnsRags , is offering one lucky reader this dress! This is totally something I would wear myself, perfect for summer time! Lynn specializes in reconstructing vintage into new clothing so the gold fabric in this dress is vintage!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
My name is Lynn and I'm the designer behind Lynn's Rags. I worked in a resale/ vintage shop for years called "Rags", so that's where my name originated from. When I was younger I wore hand me downs, mixed with very few new items of clothing. I longed for variety in my wardrobe. When I turned 16 I fell in LOVE with thrift stores. Fun clothing from every decade at prices I could afford. The only problem was the fit, so I started to teach myself how to sew. I made clothing for myself for years. When my son was born, and I was going through a divorce, I wanted to try to work from home. I started selling my stuff on eBay, and now on Etsy. I have loved my job ever since!

Your clothing line focuses on reconstructing vintage clothing to make modern pieces. Do you use repurposing in other aspects of your life besides clothing?
I do repurpose items other than clothing. I love to paint furniture, or get items reupholstered. I used fabric as wallpaper recently in my workspace, because I'm not allowed to paint.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not designing clothes?
When I'm not sewing, I am having fun with my son and my fiance. We like to shop at yard sales, swap meets, and thrift stores. We love watching movies, playing board games, or going swimming.

Five Facts Friday

It's Friday! Too bad a.) I have to work tomorrow and b.) I'm sick! :[ I made some homemade chicken noodle soup last night but that did not do the trick. I'm hoping to get lots of rest this weekend because I want to be in top shape for my trip home in less than a week! Which brings me to Five Facts Friday.

1.) When I was 24 I made the move from Michigan to California. I was basically just at that point in my life where I needed a change. I knew if I didn't move anywhere then, I probably never would.

2.) After literally years and years of contemplating and designing and brainstorming...I still don't have a tattoo. But I still want a tattoo. Will I ever go through with it? I honestly don't know.

3.) I want to go back to Hawaii and take more pictures like this. It only took like 47 tries to get it right. (It's ok, he's a good kisser.)

4.) I have never felt so motivated and passionate about my business. I've always enjoyed what I do but in the past few months this drive has taken over me. It's the most refreshing feeling.

5.) I make To-Do lists every day. Every day. I get so much satisfaction out of being productive. I guess it's a good thing but my obsessed list making still makes me feel like a nerd.

I have a really great giveaway for next week! Want a hint? It's clothing!! And don't forget to enter this week's yummy giveaway!

Studio Organization

Since moving at the beginning of this year, my studio space has been, dare I say, uninspiring. The spare room of our rental house is white-walled with brown curtains. Oh, and did I mention that it's small? And that I still have boxes of unpacked things in its closet? Ok, I admitted the worst of it. Now it's time to do something about it.

Since having a rental has it's decoration limitations (sad face) I know I'm not going to end up with one of those fancy schmancy studio spaces I drool over on Apartment Therapy. So, I made my goal small. I want to clear our the unnecessary junk from the closet and use that space for craft supply organization. I've been searching Pinterest (love) for ideas and it's getting me so inspired!

I love this idea of painting some peg board for a splash of color!

How great is this?? Shower rack turned supply organizer!

So pretty! Love the paper lined doors.

Definitely trying this tutorial for pretty storage containers.

Look at all that yarn! I really need to add to my collection.

I love the look of these mason jars but I don't
think they will work best for the supplies I have.

Now doesn't all that make you want to work on making your craft space a little prettier? It sure inspire me! The first step will be the hardest....cleaning out the closet space. I contemplated posted a "before" photo but I was too embarrassed. ;] Wish me luck!

Nautical Love

I'm loving the nautical trend right now. Maybe it's because I'm drawn to anything with stripes. Maybe it's because my family did a lot of boating when I was growing up. Whatever the case, how cute are these:

If only I could pull this off!

Screen printed anchor makes this vintage suitcase like new!

Hand-screened silk ties are so cool!

This is where my stripe obsession kicks in.

Pretty pretty hair accessory.

Really cool Compass Earrings!

The perfect accessory for the 4th of July.

Perfect pillow for a beach house (if I had one...)

A nautical look is the perfect trend for the  Fourth of July. Do you guys have Fourth of July plans yet? I'm going home to Michigan!! I'm really excited, I miss my friends and family there so much. I don't know any exact plans yet, except that there will be fireworks, boating, and my favorite people in the world!

THREE DELIGHTFUL CUPCAKE GOODIES FROM THREE ETSY SELLERS!

Ooh, do I have a fun giveaway for you this week! It's a yummy cupcake theme and who doesn't love cupcakes?! First up, we have this colorful, fun, and I'm sure delicious Kaleidoscope Cupcake created by Amanda of Amanda Cupcake.

Amanda, tell us a bit about yourself.
I worked in the fashion industry as a product developer for a successful surf company about a year ago. My friend & I spent a lot of time on our lunch hours making lists of what the name of my cupcake catering business would be. I would bring my cupcakes into work to make people smile. And ever since then, things have just been a blur. I now rent a commercial kitchen and operate a catering business! My specialties in the cupcake world:  Yummy frosting that melts in your mouth, customized cupcakes that tell a story, cupcake "kaleidoscopes" (cupcakes in a jar), cupcake pops, and cupcake decorating parties!  I also create customized cakes and cookies.

Next up, one lucky reader could win this adorable burlap cupcake banner from Amanda , of Funkyshique! I love how this simple design looks on the burlap fabric!

Amanda, tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Amanda. I am the original burlap banner designer and have truely enjoyed making these banners for the last 3 years. My specialties are weddings and happy celebrations including baby showers, weddings and showers, birthdays as well as all of the commercial holidays!

With all this cupcake fun, I had to throw in my own cupcake card from my shop , for a total of three prizes for one lucky reader!

Colored Mason Jar Tutorial

Today's DIY project is painting mason jars your favorite color! I made mine turquoise.

I love mason jars! They have an endless amount of uses and really just add an extra cuteness to everything. My favorite are the aqua Ball jars, but they are always so hard to find at thrift stores and shipping prices when buying them off Etsy or Ebay are not friendly. So why not replicate the look by painting regular mason jars? With a little more investigation I found out about Vitrea glass paint, and how it comes in lots of pretty colors, not just turquoise.

What you'll need:
Vitrea paint in the color of your choice
Paint thinner (optional)
Paint brush
Mason jar
Small dish

Squirt a pea-sized dab of the Vitrea paint onto the small dish. If you decide to use paint thinner to give your mason jar a more opaque look, combine a dab of thinner with your paint and mix.

Put your mason jar on a paint-friendly surface. Using your paint brush, make long even strokes from the top to the bottom of the glass. I experimented with a normal paint brush and a sponge paint brush and I settled on the sponge brush.

Once the jar is completely painted it needs to dry for 24 hours. Once dried, it needs to be cured in the oven. Follow the instructions on your paint bottle. I baked mine at 325 degrees for 40 minutes.

After the jar cools you can add some pretty lace and twine if you'd like, and it's ready for flowers, or anything else you want to store in a pretty jar. This would be a great DIY project for wedding centerpieces. You could have flowers in mason jars that match the wedding colors!

Enjoy!

Five Facts Friday

TGIF! I'm really looking forward to this weekend.....friends, the beach, and a DIY project I'm excited to share with you guys! But first, it's time for Five Facts Friday!

1.) Give me a dark room, a flashlight and a camera and I'm amused for way too long. I blame my painting with light photography assignment in college.

2.) 10 years of driving and I have never gotten pulled over. (knock on wood?) And this is not because I don't speed.

3.) The only drink I ever order at a bar is rum and coke. Bacardi, please.

4.) I have scoliosis and wore a back brace throughout high school. As a teen girl who wanted to wear cute clothes, it was really hard on me.

5.) I kind of love line dancing. Now, before you judge, you must know that when I lived in Michigan my friends and I went to a country bar called Coyote Joes (think Coyote Ugly with a little bit of class). I'm not a country girl, I don't own a cowboy hat, but we sure ran that dance floor. I miss those nights.

Happy Friday!

Appreciation

It is really taking me by surprise how gracious and friendly the blogging community is. Whether I host a giveaway, sponsor a giveaway, or win a giveaway, I've been getting all kinds of sweet thank you's in the mail. It's so heartwarming!

Yesterday, I received the cutest package from Jo, this week's giveaway sponsor. It had such a sweet note inside, along with my very own copy of the Wee Wee Dance Party print that's she's also giving away to one lucky Julie Ann Art reader this week. I was so excited, I immediately hung it up in my bathroom. It looks perfect! Don't forget to leave a comment here for a chance to win one of your very own!

Special thanks to the following for going out of your way to show your appreciation: JoBozarth, SoapDeliNews, LennyMud, Cuore, OurCrazyBusyBunch

Now if you are a facebook fan of Julie Ann Art, you have already heard about this next part. But I wanted to share it with my blog readers, as you support Julie Ann Art too.

"This page started out with a few fans, all friends of mine, and I can't believe how much its grown outside of that. It's very special to me that people I don't know are also supportive of what I do. In appreciation, I created a Discount Page that can be seen by fans ONLY (fancy right?). Take advantage of this coupon code at check out in my shop. The link to the code is in the left column of this page. THANK YOU!"

If you are a fan of my Etsy shop but haven't become a facebook fan yet, make sure to grab the discount code from facebook before ordering!

Again, I can't express my appreciation enough. My dreams are coming true and that wouldn't be possible without your support. xo JA

Wish List Wednesday

This week's Wish List Wednesday is a little different. It is not about something I wish to have, it is about a skill I wish to learn. I'm sad (and maybe a bit ashamed) to admit this, but, I don't know how to sew. I think it's pretty inexcusable for a craft nerd like me. When I was younger my Mom would always tell me I should learn how to sew. She gave me the whole "When I was your age I made all my clothes"... Now that I'm older, and live too far away from her, I wish I would've let her teach me to sew when I had the chance.

Now, for someone who has no sewing skills, I have a little obsession with vintage sewing machines. They're just so much more intricate and pretty than the sewing machines now-a-days. Enter, this beauty:

This is mine! The most amazing gift I could ask for, from my boyfriend for Christmas last year. Isn't it the prettiest color? It has undergone some maintenance in our garage/studio and is now in working condition.

But, I have no clue where to start. None. And every time I see it sitting in there I get a little sad because 1.) I don't know how to use it and 2.) It's too pretty to be sitting there being unseen all the time.

So, in an effort to learn a new skill, and not have to lower my head in shame every time a sewing DIY project sparks my interest, I'm going to take baby steps towards this "wish." I considered taking a class at Jo Ann Fabric's (anyone ever taken one?). I'm also going to find some scrap fabric and just get the feel of the running machine. Oh and probably some youtube videos? Any suggestions or tutorials you have are welcome!

Yellow Love

We've been having a lot of sunny days lately and it's really getting me excited for summer. One of my favorite colors this season is yellow. It's so bright and happy, I am just drawn to it.

This vintage skirt is soooo cute!

How sweet is this elephant?

Pretty hairpins!

This pillow would add some color to any room.

I love silk screened shirts like this.

Cute yet sexy dress!

I hope this Etsy Love post brought some brightness to your days! I have been busy busy with Etsy orders and consignment agreements for various stockists! Plus with summer in the air, it's just a very exciting time for me! Talk soon, JA.

WEE WEE DANCE PRINT by JOBOZARTH

Today, Jo Bozarth is giving a lucky reader one of her super fun Wee Wee Dance prints from her Etsy shop! I would totally hang this print on my bathroom door. It's definitely my style, simple but quarky! I'm happy I got the chance to interview Jo because I learned we have a lot in common!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm a born and bred Californian who currently lives in Los Angeles. On most days, I can be found on a hiking trail with caffeine in one hand, and my dog's leash in the other. Of course, he's at the other end of that leash. :) I share an apartment with my boyfriend, Avi, and my dog, Fernando. Avi and I adopted him a little over a year ago, and he is just the bee's knees!

Aside from drawing in 13 hour marathon sessions (I'm a little nutty that way) I am currently acting in a web series and having a blast playing a very sassy, very empowered love god who lives in modern times. If you have few minutes and are looking for some online entertainment, please pop on over to Cupid and Eros and check it out!

How did you get into making art?
My mom says I was drawing before I could walk or talk. On most days that still holds true, at least until I've had my morning coffee! I began college as a graphic design major, but soon discovered that I was not good at following the rules as far as my art was concerned. I eventually graduated with a degree in psychology. Even so, I never stopped doing what I love (drawing) and doing it in a way that was satisfying to me.

Shh..I'm Reading print.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?
When I'm not working, I'm usually hiking, watching classic or foreign films (I love anything Almodovar), trying to play my guitar (the operative word there is trying), or listening to jazz records while concocting something in the kitchen. I don't do meat or dairy of any kind, so if you have any fun veggie recipes, send them my way! :)

7 Day Push

Have you heard about the 7 Day Push? Ashley, of After Nine to Five, created this awesome idea of taking one small step each week towards a better lifestyle. Weekly themes will range from exercising to penny pinching.

The hardest part for me with this sort of thing is staying motivated. I will start exercising but tend to fall off the wagon after a week. I'll think I have too much other stuff to do. And while, yes, I'm usually pretty busy, will it really kill me to take 15 minutes out of my day to exercise?

That is this week's challenge. 15 minutes of exercise a day. When I say it, it sounds easy. What's 15 minutes out of an entire day? But, I know I will be faced with "but I really need to get these Etsy orders packaged up" or "I need to write a blog post." I need to learn how to put work on hold for my health.

So my plan for this week is to bike ride after work every day. We like to take our pup, Penny, to the park by our house. There are always other dogs there that she can play with (and that will wear her out!).

I hope you'll join in and link up over on Ashley's blog! You can also use the hashtag #7DayPush on Twitter to find fellow bloggers that are participating. Let's work together and DO THIS!

Five Facts Friday

I thought Five Facts Friday would be a good way to help you guys get to know me! Some of my favorite blogs are personal, lifestyle blogs that really make you feel like you know the blogger. Making blogger friends is so important in this business. I don't want my difficulty of talking about myself to hold me back from that. So here are today's five facts!

1. I'm an only child. Although when I was younger I used to tell people I had an older brother named Michael.

2. I'm super shy. It's really hard for me to be myself around new people.

3. I finished up my degree in Photography with an internship at Martha Stewart Living. This was during her tethered ankle days. (She had no shame in it and wore capris to show it off.)

4. I want red hair. Bright red. But obviously it will probably look awful so I'm chicken.

5. The "coolest" pet I had as a kid was a guinea pig. They now have a special place in my heart. My kids will never have hamsters.

Happy Friday! Have a good weekend! :]

Chalkboard Flower Pot Tutorial

I'm so excited for this tutorial! As you probably know from my Chalkboard Love post, I loooove chalkboard paint. I'm also really getting into planting flowers and herbs in cute little pots. So, here we have the Chalkboard Flower Pot Tutorial!

What you'll need:
Chalk pot
Painter's tape
Chalkboard spray paint
Spray paint (if you want to paint the pot a different color)
Material to cover the ground

Make sure to do this tutorial outside, or in an open area! I made mine in the studio space we made in the garage since we already had a sheet of canvas covering the floor.

If you are going to paint your orange clay pot a different color, do that first, following the instructions that are on your spray paint can.

I chose a pale yellow color that I have had a while but have not yet used for anything. Let your painted pot stand for 24 hours before going on to the next step.

Once your pot is completely dry, use your painter's tape to cover the areas of the pot that you don't want to turn into chalkboard. I decided to spray just the rim of the pot with chalkboard paint.

Let the pot stand for another 24 hours, then remove the painter's tape. Your super cute pot will be ready to go!

I put some succulent clippings in mine but another great idea would be to use these for your homegrown herbs and label them with chalk!
